The 3R’s of Ziran – Resilient, Rooted, Rhapsodic

Have you imagined a workplace this magnificent and exceptional? Being an international research facility, Ziran’s India office, located in the industrial zone of the Sangli district, is decoding the stereotypical design through its exclusive architecture. This project is a collaborative effort of Ar. Mohit Chaugule (Studio 888 Architects), Ar. Dipika Dinkar Patil (Landscape Consultant), and Shilpi Badiger (Stone Specialist). The core concept was not to surrender to set expectations of an international facility but instead to provide overseas visitors with a taste of authentic Indian style of wada architecture. Amidst the factory-budded roofs in the Miraj MIDC, this project highlights the traditional layered, sloping Mangalore tiles against the rich green landscape. The striking landscape, including small boulders, trimmed canopies, and meandering walkways, are some welcoming aesthetic visuals experienced as one approaches the office at the rear end of the side. A majestic entrance canopy leads to the elevated verandah with the decorated stone pillars carved out of a single stone and a grand wooden door awaiting your arrival. Taking up the challenge of converting factory open spaces into green spaces considering nearby pollution and mundane environments, the project steered through to create pockets of relaxation and visual excitement for employees, directors, and visitors. A short retreat from the daily routine. The stone artist, Shilpi Badiger, excelled on this project with his 30 years of experience following his ancestor’s footsteps. His team of sixteen skilled workers carved the stone pillars, welcome elephants, elephant brackets and other landscape elements as seen in the premise. The project is testament to the architect’s vision of combining local artistry with skilled craftsmanship and appropriate technology with traditional values.
