UAIMS,Designing for Health

post by Admin on October 20, 2024
Breaking away from the stereotypical image of healthcare typology, the design of Ushakal Abhinav Institute of Medical Sciences at Sangli, Maharashtra I’d a breath of fresh air! The UAIMS (Ushahkal Abhinav Institute of Medical Sciences), is a healthcare project based in Sangli, Maharashtra, that spreads across a campus about 4 acres. Sangli-Miraj is a well-known center for healthcare institutes and hospitals. While these hospitals widely attract patients from neighboring cities, up until UAIMS, they lacked multispeciality facilities and institute- like infrastructure. The vital idea of this project was to create an institute and render maximum healthcare related facilities under one campus. This institute is one of a kind landmark structure on a belt of about 300 kms south of Pune. Hence, the site chosen was located on the outskirts of Sangli, allowing direct access for several neighboring cities by state and national highways. The site is surrounded by a network Structurally, the buildings are built with Prestressed Post Tensioning technology to achieve flexibility in planning departments and allied services essential to a hospital. This technology helped achieve 18m long column free spans and pre planned MEP services such as chutes, ELV, Electric and Fire shafts, all planned as individual shafts to ensure smooth working. The façade of the building is clad with 6mm thick bricks, allowing a temperature difference of upto 4 degree Celsius. Various landscape features were also introduced on the premises along with ample parking spaces allocated for patients, doctors, directors etc. The vision of the architect behind UAIMS is exemplary of how design can become integral to the healing process by continuously catering to the smaller details in healthcare design. It gently awakens us to go beyond set templates and create modern, functional spaces.
